Transportation
Madison has been trying to bring rapid transit to our city for over three decades. One of the promises I made to you when I took office in 2019 was to finally get that done and we did. We broke ground on the East/West line of our Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in late 2022 and it’s scheduled to go into service in 2023/24. Accessible, rapid, affordable public transit is key to unlocking economic development in our city and reaching our climate goals.
I promised to maintain all our transportation infrastructure – streets, sidewalks, bike paths, and buses, design and build complete – and green – streets that are safe for people, no matter how they travel, and eliminate serious and fatal crashes in Madison by 2030. Under the direction of my administration and in coordination with the Common Council, we have launched and expanded numerous programs that will achieve these goals in the near future.
I promised to...
We delivered...
to implement Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in the Madison region.
We successfully championed the new East/West BRT line, which has been approved by Council, and secured over $100 million in federal funding from President Biden. The new system will launch in 2023, with full build out in 2024.
Maintain all our transportation infrastructure – streets, sidewalks, bike paths, and buses.
We invested over $400 million in transportation infrastructure over three years. And we’re working to shift costs for sidewalks away from homeowners
provide transit to key employment sites, and for folks that don't work 9-5, and keep transit affordable.
We've Redesigned our transit service to provide fast, frequent service from low income neighborhoods to employment destinations.
build out our bike network for all ages & abilities.
We've allocated over $9 million in capital funds for bicycle infrastructure projects, maintaining our Platinum Bike City status.
Reduce dangerous crashes in Madison.
We've launched Vision Zero, an ambitious project to eliminate serious and fatal crashes in Madison by 2030. Via education, engineering, and enforcement, we have already reduced injury crashes by half and earned a Gold Walking City rating.
build complete – and green – streets that are safe for people, no matter how they travel.
We passed a Complete, Green Streets Policy that prioritizes safety and sustainability. An updated, city-wide Transportation Demand Management program will help to further expand sustainable transportation options.
In the last two years, we have made very good progress in reducing fatalities and serious injuries as we continue education and enforcement efforts.
There’s more work to do!
-
We must start work on the North/South BRT line
-
We’re actively seeking funding to implement Vision Zero projects
-
We need to take a comprehensive, data-informed look at parking policy
-
We need to work to bring Amtrak service to Madison
To accomplish these projects and more, we need to re-elect Mayor Satya and build a better Madison - together.
